Campaign Rally with Jim McGarva and Mike Schreiner on Thursday April 21st
Posted on April 14th, 2011
Dear Green Supporters,
Our campaign is now in its second week and we’re growing stronger every day.
We are in great shape for this spring election. We have an amazing team of remarkable and dedicated volunteers, and we are welcoming new members daily. We have a fantastic candidate in Jim McGarva. He grew up in the neighbourhood, and now lives in the riding with his young, growing family. Jim’s priorities for this campaign are healthy clean communities, support for families, reliable transit and a sustainable green economy.
We would like you to meet Jim and hear what he has to say. Join us for our campaign rally next Thursday April 21 at
7pm. We will be meeting upstairs at the Fox and Fiddle Pub, 1535 Yonge Street at Heath (see map).
Also joining us will be Green Party of Ontario Leader Mike Schreiner and our provincial candidate Judith Van Veldhuysen.
Please RSVP to stpaulsgreens@greenparty.ca by Monday April 18th.
Spread the word to your friends and neighbours, and see you there!

Tell us something the Greens didn’t already know: Canada’s destructive environmental trends can affect health of all Canadians
Posted on April 7th, 2011
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Toronto, April 7,2011) If you think environmental gains like reduced air pollution emissions, good water quality and healthy forest bird populations mean environmental issues are no longer important this election, think again.
According to the new Canada Index of Wellbeing report released April 7, 2011, there are evident and alarming warning signs of potential threats to our environment and health. The report finds that increasing greenhouse gasses, mounting waste generation and energy use, declining stocks of large fish species, and dwindling water supplies in parts of Canada are offsetting any environmental gains.
The report goes on to say: “Some of these environmental trends could eventually result in poorer health, a weaker economy, lower standard of living and diminished quality of life. Like many countries, Canada is facing difficult challenges and the choices we make as a society will determine whether we face a distressed future or a better quality of life.”
Yet another reason to VOTE GREEN this May 2, 2011, because when the Liberals and Conservatives fail to make the environment a priority, we all pay the price—with our health.
Says St. Paul’s Jim McGarva: “This is further evidence that concrete action is needed now to fight for a cleaner, healthier Canadian environment. The health of our entire society depends on this.”
McGarva says this report serves to galvanize his campaign team in St. Paul’s to work even harder to have the Green voice heard in Ottawa.

Saturday’s Campaign Launch!
Posted on April 5th, 2011
Saturday the St. Paul’s Greens had their campaign launch with our federal candidate Jim McGarva. We had a great turnout, with some of the afternoon spent canvassing and talking to constituents from around the riding.
For all those that participated and volunteered their time, thank you! For those that are still interested in helping out in the campaign, don’t worry there’s still time! We always love volunteers. Click here to fill out a volunteer form and we will be in touch with you shortly.
This just in… Greens left out of local debate
Posted on April 4th, 2011
The anti-democratic decision to keep GPC leader Elizabeth May out of the national televised debates is now trickling down to local ridings. Beth Tzedec regrets it cannot invite St. Paul’s candidate Jim McGarva to its upcoming community debate on April 21, 2011, due to the broadcast consortium’s decision. The debate is being hosted by the CBC’s Ira Basen, and follows the consortium’s decision to limit the national debate to the leaders of the Conservative, Liberal, NDP and Bloc parties.
Voice your disagreement with the consortium here by leaving a comment or by tweeting us @stpaulsgreens. We all look forward to meeting with members of the Beth Tzedec congregation and community, and speaking further about our vision for a stronger environment, a stronger democracy and a stronger country, starting right here in St. Paul’s.
Campaign Launch and Volunteer Training This Saturday!
Posted on March 31st, 2011
The campaign will kick off this Saturday with volunteer training and our official campaign launch.
We will begin the day at 2PM at the Deer Park Library (see map) with volunteer orientation and canvassing training, led by a few of our seasoned organizers, and then we’ll hit the streets canvassing for the first time in the campaign.
At 5PM, come meet Jim and the rest of the campaign team at our campaign launch. We’ll talk about how to best use our resources in the month ahead and how to best introduce Jim to the community.

Joining us will be Tony Marcil, former president of the Forest Stewardship Council of Canada and the World Environment Centre. Tony has been a lifelong advocate for the environment, and he also brings years of experience in political campaigns as a former senior advisor to St. Paul’s Liberal MP Carolyn Bennett.
The event will be at the Fox and Fiddle pub on Yonge at Heath St, just north of St. Clair:

St. Paul’s Nominates Federal Candidate Jim McGarva
Posted on March 31st, 2011
For Immediate Release
(Toronto, March 31, 2010)
Community supporter Jim McGarva successfully won the Green Party federal nomination for the riding of St. Paul’s last night.
McGarva, a longtime resident of the area, is a PhD candidate in mathematics at the University of Toronto, and is also an alumnus of the University of Waterloo.
With strong ties to his community, McGarva is an ardent supporter of local, organic and community businesses and can often be seen with his family members supporting the farmers’ markets and area enterprises. He has volunteered at a Toronto food bank, and recently volunteered for the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides, fostering a pet that was trained and is now working with a child with autism.
McGarva is hoping to effect change in the world, not only for the future of his young children, but for the future of all Canadians.
His top Green issues are sustainable economic development, a clean, efficient public transit system, and a strong participatory democratic base.
“Clean air, clean water, clean food–these are the reasons I am running as the federal Green Party candidate,” says McGarva.

St. Paul’s Federal Nomination Meeting – Wed March 30 – 7PM
Posted on March 29th, 2011
Dear Green Supporters,
The opposition parties have pulled the plug on the federal parliament, plunging the country into a spring election. It’s time for us to spring into action!
Fortunately we’re in very good shape for a federal election in St. Paul’s. We have the largest war chest ever, we have a core group of enthusiastic and talented volunteers, and we have gained valuable experience from the last two elections that will serve us in the compressed time span of a snap election.
All we need now is a candidate.
We will be having our Green Party of Canada nomination meeting this Wednesday March 30th at 7PM upstairs at the Twisted Kilt pub, just north of Yonge & Davisville.
We’ll follow up the nomination meeting with a brief orientation session for the campaign. If you want to do your part to help make this the strongest result ever in St. Paul’s, please consider coming out and lending a hand in the campaign!
We look forward to seeing you there!
